Rationality: Perfect, Absent, or Bounded?

چکیده
This paper attempts to put the research on human rationality into proper context by looking at it across disciplines and by identifying the main questions that propelled research in di erent elds. Experimental psychology produced many results that need to be evaluated critically for a complete understanding of the concept. The present paper presents some of these numerous ndings, but mostly focuses on personal comments on the nature of human reasoning.

Bounded Rationality in the Iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma
In diverse fields such as computer science, economics and psychology, bounded rationality has emerged as an important research topic. Models which assume the existence of perfectly rational agents seem inadequate for many realworld problems where agents often lack perfect rationality. Classes of imperfect rationality include the conditions of incomplete knowledge, memory, information or computa...
متن کاملEndogenous Fluctuations in a Bounded Rationality Economy: Learning Non-perfect Foresight Equilibria
We study forward-looking economic models assuming that agents take one step ahead expectations looking back k time periods. We show that the dynamics of the economy with such an expectation function are characterized by the coexistence of perfect foresight and nonperfect foresight cycles. The stability of all these periodic solutions under bounded rationality is related to the stability of the ...
متن کاملFinite Stage Centipede Game and other Finite Two Player Dynamic Games with Bounded Rationality
Subgame Perfect Nash Equilibrium (SPNE), as a predictive theory, has been found to be inconsistent with experimental evidence in many dynamic games. This working paper introduces bounded rationality of varying degrees through a distribution of the types of each player in finite dynamic games, and checks if that rationalizes observed/“intuitive” behavior. Each of these types has a different degr...
متن کاملModeling Bounded Rationality in Capacity Allocation Games with the Quantal Response Equilibrium
We consider a supply chain with a single supplier and two retailers. The retailers choose their orders strategically, and if their orders exceed the supplier's capacity, quantities are allocated proportionally to the orders. We experimentally study the capacity allocation game using subjects motivated by financial incentives. We find that the Nash equilibrium, which assumes that players are per...
متن کاملTowards Rational Agency
Until recently perfect rationality was the most desired property of intelligent systems, i.e. rational agents, stipulating that they always act so as to maximize their expected utility given their beliefs. Nowadays a shift can be seen both in economy (from perfect to bounded rationality), in game theory (from action to program selection) and in philosophy (from act to rule utilitarianism) becau...
